2 Productivity Life Hacks to Supercharge Your Day

Do you have REACTIVE LIFE SYNDROME? Growth strategist Jonathan Fields coined this phrase to describe how many of us live our lives looking at what everyone else thinks should be important to us. You wake up and check Facebook, Instagram and twitter, instantly bombarded with ideas, quotes and images. Next you respond to text messages and answer emails, immediately putting out everybody else’s fires, handling everyone else’s needs. Once your work is done, you might watch TV or read magazines with information that marketers think you should see, always attached to items that you just have to buy (usually based on fear).  When will you TAKE THE CONTENT OF YOUR LIFE BACK in to your own hands?!

There’s no time like the present!

Here are 2 Productivity Life Hacks to Supercharge Your Day:

1. Give yourself 2 times per day to check your voicemail, email and social media.

If responsiveness is key to your job, you can state in your voicemail message, and have an automated return email that sounds something like this one that I snagged from Tim Ferriss:

Greetings, Friends [or Esteemed Colleagues],

Due to high workload, I am currently checking and responding to e-mail twice daily at 12: 00 P.M. ET [or your time zone] and 4: 00 P.M. ET.

If you require urgent assistance (please ensure it is urgent) that cannot wait until either 12: 00 P.M. or 4: 00 P.M., please contact me via phone at 555-555-5555.

Thank you for understanding this move to more efficiency and effectiveness. It helps me accomplish more to serve you better.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

2. Before you go to bed, write a list of 3 things you’ll accomplish the next day.

Put your highest goal at position one, and so on. When you wake up, meditate, enjoy your coffee/tea/breakfast, get your kids to school (if you’ve got them), get your workout in, and start on your list. A good time to check your email and voicemail is at least an hour or two after working on your number one goal. That way, instead of answering everyone else’s needs, putting out their fires, you are really getting some solid time focusing on what’s important to YOU in order to meet your life goals. By waiting a few hours before you respond to other’s needs, you’ll see that many problems have already worked themselves out. Get your social media fix if needed, (don’t get sucked down the rabbit hole for longer than 15 min ; ). Next, go back to your list, and accomplish as much of it as you can.

Check your voice and email messages and social media once more near the end of your workday. Make sure you have some time left (perhaps an hour) to handle any last minute things that come up that you’ve got to take care of in response to others.

When you go to bed, make a new list of 3. Include anything you were unable to get to on the current day, add on and re-number based on order of importance.

These hacks are challenging!!! In this age of moment-to-moment responsiveness, there is the cultural expectation that everything will be answered and handled immediately. You’ll have to commit yourself to breaking free of this addiction. To guide your day with focus and action, rather than constant re-action. Also, it’ll take a while for others to get used to your new schedule. You’ll have to remind them that you’re working diligently and efficiently and that this is the best way you’ve found to serve them effectively.

You’ll slowly find that you are taking back your life– able to make your dreams and goals happen. Utilize these life hacks and you’ll supercharge your day. Remember: YOU decide on the content of your life!
